In 2023, Hindi cinema made a comeback. It was finally time for some real, shameless hits. In theatres, propaganda movies like The Kerala Story and Gadar 2 continued to rule, but Shah Rukh Khan also engaged the electorate in a heart-to-heart in Jawan (India holds elections in 2024). Also, in the interim, other performers and Hindi films had their chance to shine.
In theatres, there were loud animal productions along with some sweet, loving dramas. These are the top ten most memorable Hindi movies of 2023, listed in no particular order.
IMDB Rating: 8.1/10
Killa (2015), Avinash Arun’s debut feature film, was a moving story about childhood and loss on the Konkan coast. Three of Us is primarily about adults, not kids, but it still explores many of Arun’s enduring themes, including friendship, memory, and the value and beauty of nature.
IMDB Rating: 7/10
Another movie, yet another jaw-dropping performance by Jaideep Ahlawat. Jaane Jaan was promoted as Kareena Kapoor Khan’s streaming premiere, and the actress—who is never bad—definitely plays the lead in Sujoy Ghosh’s mystery, a suspenseful how-to film adapted from the Keigo Higashino book The Devotion of Suspect X.
IMDB Rating: 7.8/10
Avinash Arun’s Three of Us and Pushan Kripalani’s London-set Goldfish are very different from each other, both emotionally and tonally. When the COVID-19 pandemic first breaks out, Anamika (Kalki Koechlin) is compelled to take care of her sick mother (Deepti Naval). Both Koechlin and Naval are excellent in their parts, and the biting jabs exchanged between mother and daughter feel painfully genuine.
IMDB Rating: 6.7/10
Much of the movie rested on Ranveer Singh‘s deft shoulders. Rocky Randhawa was one of the nicer guys Bollywood produced in a year of unrestrained toxic masculinity: he was open to change and willing to learn, even though he had never read the Constitution.
IMDB Rating: 7.5/10
The remarkable thing about it is Makhija’s extraordinary restraint when it comes to his material. Sound designer Dhiman Karmakar creates music out of silence, using elements like the melancholic gurgling of a forest brook and the gentle rustle of the wind in the meadows. Joram is as cruel and savage as any of Makhija’s previous movies, but it also has poetic moments.
IMDB Rating: 9.2/10
The film directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra often makes you want to cry, but its sincerity and warmth make up for it. Despite the fact that Massey’s nimble and charming performance was anything but sleepy, 12th Fail had a fantastic run in theatres and was dubbed a sleeper hit.
IMDB Rating: 6.5/10
Among other things, Ajitpal Singh’s Sundance premiere film pays homage to the labour of women in rural India with great emotion. In Munsiyari, Uttarakhand, Chandra (a radiant Vinamrata Rai) hustles down a slope every day to harry down guests for her homestay; afterwards, she joins the other women to cut grass and sing songs.
IMDB Rating: 7/10
Along with Jawan, Shah Rukh Khan started his own “Clean India” campaign. With all of its accompanying sentimentality and silliness, Atlee’s big action extravaganza shocked viewers with its raw political commentary.
IMDB Rating: 7.5/10
A runaway couple, expertly portrayed by Abhinav Jha and Tanaya Khan Jha, returns to their hometown in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic in Parth Saurabh’s clear-eyed debut feature. It is a poignant, realistic, and charming portrait of a young love in transition.
IMDB Rating: 7.2/10
Arthouse pretensions are not really needed in Vijay Maurya’s comedy, which revolves around two unlikely couples whose lives intersect in Mumbai. Neither is it; it’s a fully commercial film with a straight-to-digital release and two blithesome sexagenarians in the lead roles.
