Former South-African captain considers international comeback ahead of T20 World Cup

Faf du Plessis last represented the Proteas back in February 2021, almost three years ago.

Faf du Plessis last played for South Africa back in February 2021 but has not given up hopes of representing the Proteas again in the future. The 39-year-old is considering making a comeback to the international scene ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup, which will be held in the West Indies and the United States of America.

Even though he has not represented the Proteas for a while, Du Plessis has been a remarkable and consistent performer in T20 leagues worldwide. In the IPL, which is considered to be the toughest tournament in the world, Du Plessis, has scored over 400 runs in each of the last four seasons. This year, he scored 730 runs, just behind Shubman Gill, who was the highest run scorer. Du Plessis’ runs came at an average of 56.15 and a strike rate of 153.68, which shows just how big an impact he had at the top of the order for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

It remains to be seen if Faf’s plans for an international comeback will materialize.

I believe that I can return to international cricket: Faf du Plessis

Currently participating in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, the former Proteas captain has confirmed that he has been in touch with South Africa’s coach, Rob Walter concerning his return. “I believe that I can return to international cricket. We have been speaking about this for the last couple of years. It’s just figuring out the balance of the T20 World Cup next year. It’s certainly something we have spoken about with the new coach,” Du Plessis said.

Walter, on his part, has said that the doors are open for du Plessis to get back into the international fold. “Given that some of our frontline bowlers are missing out and there are guys – let me throw it out there just to create some media hype – like Faf and Rilee as well as Quinny that could well be considered for a T20 World Cup,” Walter said.

It remains to be seen if Faf’s return will materialize but if it does, it will be great news for fans as he has been a remarkable player for a long period. There is absolutely no doubt about his credentials and he could perhaps help the Proteas win their first World Cup title.
