India started on a great note in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy where they got a big win in Nagpur by an innings and 132 runs and in Delhi by 6 wickets. Then Australia showed what they are made up of with a big nine-wicket win in Indore.

The Australian spin trio of Nathan Lyon, Mathew Kuhemann, and Todd Murphy have bowled better on the turning pitches than the Indian spinners in the series so far.

Even as India are leading the series 2-1, Sunil Gavaskar has dropped a bombshell about the state of the current Indian bowling attack. The former India captain said that India lack the fast bowling arsenal due to the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami and so they have been preparing rank turners to compensate for the loss.

‘India had to make turning tracks to qualify for Test Championship final’ – Sunil Gavaskar

“Taking 20 wickets is not going to be easy in India. On a lot of Indian pitches, without your ace bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami and a slightly inexperienced Mohammed Siraj, I don’t think that bowling attack is such (strong). But with a little bit of help from a dry pitch, India can probably take 20 wickets. I think that is the thinking behind preparing such pitches,” Gavaskar said.

Shami had been rested due to workload management in the third Test in Indore and is likely that he will be brought back for the all-important fourth Test at Ahmedabad in a must-win situation to solidify India’s chances at the Test Championship final in England.

Shami would be drafted back into the Indian side. Bumrah has not been part of the Indian side and will miss the 2023 edition of the Indian T20 League.

“For India to reach the World Test Championship Final, they did not have any other options (than producing turning tracks). If you would have had a strong attack, maybe you could have done something different but your strength is your spinners and therefore I think these pitches are being made. You do not want a flat pitch where the batters go out and dominate. These pitches are testing the temperament of the batters,” Gavaskar added.
