New Zealand ended up beating India by 7 wickets in the first game of the three-match series at Eden Park, Auckland. The kiwis comfortably chased down the target of 308 with 17 balls to spare as Tom Latham scored a magnificent 145 off 104 balls. Latham was involved in a 221-run stand off 162 balls with captain Kane Williamson who scored an unbeaten 94 off 98 balls. Following the loss in the series opener, former England captain Michael Vaughan took a brutal dig at captain Shikhar Dhawan and head coach VVS Laxman.

India only had five bowling options in their playing eleven for the series opener- Arshdeep Singh, Uman Malik, Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal. And the tactic had backfired on them miserably as they missed a sixth bowler to help stop the carnage by Williamson and Latham.

After the match ended, former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer hailed Williamson and Latham for their match-winning knocks but also opined that India missed the trick with the bowling.

“Well played @BLACKCAPS Made 300 look like 270. Williamson all class as always but Latham stole the show. Not easy for an opener to move down the order and still be successful. India missed a trick by just playing 5 bowlers. #NZvIND,” Jaffer tweeted.

In response to Jaffer’s tweet, Vaughan lashed out at the Indian think tank, calling them old-fashioned. “They are a dated ODI team .. you need at least 6 if not 7 bowling options …,” he replied.

The loss in the first ODI was India’s fourth consecutive ODI loss against New Zealand in ODIS. The Men in Blue were whitewashed 3-0 in the ODI series in February 2020. Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer starred with the bat for India in the first innings scoring 72 (77) and 80 (76) respectively. On the other hand, Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson picked up three-wickets each.

Deepak Hooda, Deepak Chahar and Kuldeep Yadav warmed the bench in the first ODI.  The two teams will once again face off in the second ODI on November 27th, Sunday at Seddon Park, Hamilton starting at 7:00 AM (IST).
