David Warner has been a giant in Test Cricket for Australia. The swashbuckling batter has scored 8158 runs at an average of 45.57 and a strike rate of 71.03. Warner recently endured a poor run of form in the white flannels before smashing a double hundred against South Africa just before the India tour.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is of the opinion that Warner should have bid adieu to Tests in January. He also said that Warner made the mistake of leaving his Test career in the hands of the Australian selectors. Warner was left out of the remaining two Tests against India after injuring his shoulder in Delhi.

We will see how he goes – Ricky Ponting on David Warner

In 10 matches that he has played in India, Warner has scored just 414 runs at an average of 21.78 and a strike rate of 52.67. He has just scored three fifties in a span of 10 years. In the three innings that he had played in the two Tests before he got injured, he scored 26 runs in three innings before he was ruled out. Warner has not been able to prove himself as a Test batter in Indian conditions.

“For him to finish the way he deserves to finish, the obvious thing for me was to pull the pin after Sydney,” Ponting told RSN this week.”He got 200 in Melbourne, played his 100th Test, played the next Test in Sydney, his home ground and maybe finish there. Ricky Ponting said as quoted by the West Australian.

“The last thing he deserved is to be away on a tour and get in to the middle of a series and get dropped and his career is over. That would be an awful way for him to finish. “It’s happened to all of us, it happened to me. “When you get to a certain age and it looks like your form is dropping off slightly, then the knives are sharpened and it doesn’t take long. “He’s a driven little man, a pretty stubborn little bugger, so we’ll see how he goes.”
