‘For me it’s a huge deal’ – Star Indian fast bowler reacts to Sunil Gavaskar’s massive praise for him
Umran Malik has been touted as the most exciting talent coming into the Indian team ever since he left his mark in the Indian T20 League 2022. His ability to clock speeds in excess of 150 consistently and rush the batters leaves everyone on the edge of their seats. His searing pace has fetched him praises from several greats of the game.
While former fast bowlers Brett Lee and Dale Steyn didn’t hold back while backing Umran, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram even went on to ask why was he not included in the 2022 20-20 World Cup squad. But the best remarks came from India icon Sunil Gavaskar who said something which really floored the youngster.
“The last time I got really excited at seeing an Indian player was Sachin Tendulkar. And after that I am excited to see Umran Malik. I do believe he should play,” Gavaskar had said during the India vs South Africa T20I series back in June when Umran had earned his maiden India call-up.
Meanwhile, when Umran was told about it, he couldn’t stop from expressing his true self in a chat with News 24 Sports.
“Thank you, sir. If he gets excited seeing me, I am thankful. I obviously like it if someone says something good about me. For me, it’s a huge deal,” Umran told News24 Sports in an interview.
I will play everything that comes my way: Umran Malik
Talking about his entry into Test cricket, Malik said that he will give his best whenever he gets the chance.
“See, whatever call I get regarding whichever cricket, I have to play. Be it Ranji or anything else. Even when I am not on National duty, I will play everything that comes my way. I am ready to play any and all format. Every cricketer dreams of wearing the Test jersey and hopefully, whenever I get the chance, I will give my best,” added Umran.
Umran Malik made his international debut in a T20I against Ireland on 26 June 2022. He further made his ODI debut against New Zealand in November 2022. He has picked up 2 wickets in 3 T20Is so far and 7 wickets in 5 ODIs so far. Umran will be next seen in the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka starting on 3rd January.
