In a close battle, India lost the first T20I against West Indies in Trinidad by just 4 runs. On a tricky wicket to bat on, West Indies captain Rovman Powell won the toss and elected to bat first. The pitch had a lot in it for the bowlers. For pacers, there was a good seam, a good carry, and pace on it. The spinners got a bit of extra bounce and spin from the wicket.

It was not the easiest of wickets to bat on. It was quite evident when the two teams were batting. West Indies batters struggled to score runs against the Indian spinners, and so did the Indian batters. Brandon King scored 28 runs in 19 balls and gave a decent start to the home side. It was continued well by the pair of Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell.

Even someone as dangerous as Pooran could not score runs quickly on the Trinidad wicket. It was Powell who really turned things for the home side. With his mighty blows, Powell helped West Indies to cross over 140 runs in their innings. 149 was the score of West Indies, which was competitive on that wicket. For India, Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal picked 2 wickets each. Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya bowled brilliant spells in the middle overs and claimed a wicket each.

Lack of application from India batters

India did not have a great start to their innings. Chasing 150, the visiting side was reduced to 28/2 after 5 overs. The debutant Tilak Verma shined with his batsmanship. On a tricky wicket, the Southpaw raced away to 39(22) before getting dismissed. It was the only positive thing for India in batting. All the other batters failed to apply themselves.

Towards the end, Arshdeep Singh tried his best to win the match for his team, but it was not to be. As a result, West Indies won the match by 4 runs and claimed the lead in the series. Akeal Hosein, Obed McCoy, and Jason Holder bowled well for the home side.
