The exciting action continued in the FIFA World Cup 2022 on Friday as Iran and Wales clashed against each other in Group B encounter. Iran came into this game after suffering a 6-2 defeat against England in their opening match. On the other hand, Wales looked to win their first game after playing a draw against USA 1-1.

Wales struggled to find any rhythm throughout the match and were forced to play the last part of the game with 10 men after Wayne Hennesey was sent off. Unlike their first match against England, the Iranian players decided to sing the national anthem amid loud jeering from the Iran fans in the ground.

Both teams had a good start to the game with Kieffer Moore creating the first big chance within the first 12 minutes but his close range header was saved by Iran goalkeeper Hossein Hosseini.

Less than five minutes later, Ali Gholizadeh sent the ball into the back of the net but VAR ruled out the effort for offside. Both teams ended goalless at half time which has now happened in the last five matches at the World Cup.

Iran looked to be dominating during the second half and struck the woodwork twice in a matter of seconds. Sardar Azmoun was given an opportunity to score for his team but his effort hit the post. The ball then fell to Gholizadeh and his curling shot struck the other post before Hennessey stopped Azmoun’s rebound. Hennessey was called into action once again after 73 minutes as he produced an excellent save to deny Saeid Ezatolahi.

However, Hennessey’s game was ended prematurely after he was shown a red card after a high challenge on Mehdi Taremi with five minutes remaining.

The game looked to be heading towards a draw with both teams failing to score in the initial phase of stoppage time. However, Roozbeh Cheshmi netted the ball in the 98th minute sending the Iranian fans into a frenzy.

Wales further made matters worse for themselves as Ramin Rezaeian scored another goal for Iran in the 101st minute. The game was brought alive with the last minute goals as Iran kept their hopes alive of qualification to the next stage. As the final whistle blew, Iran took the much-deserved three points to their name winning the game by 2-0.
