FIBA World Cup updates

The United States have had a great run in the tournament so far.

The FIBA or Basketball World Cup is currently on the run.  When it comes to Lavatia, it will go up against either Slovenia or Lithuania for fifth place in the tournament. Lavatia beat Italy in a close game 87-82 on Thursday, right when the consolation playoffs started. Slovenia and  Lithuania will play each other on Thursday.  The winner gets Latvia in Saturday’s fifth-place game; the loser plays Italy for seventh place, also on Saturday.

Talking about the game, Andrejs Grazulis hit 12 of his 13 shots, and ended the game with 28 points which also had six rebounds to lead the winners (5-2). Grazulis’ final shot of the night was a 3-pointer with just 24 seconds to go on the clock got them the victory. Latvia ended the game 15 of 31 from 3-point range. Aigars Skele was superb as he added 12 for Latvia, which is playing in its first World Cup.

He was playing his penultimate game as captain of the national side, Gigi Datome led Italy (4-3) with 20 points. Italy went into the game without Utah forward Simone Fontecchio, who was held out. On the other hand, the United States after a stellar campaign made it to  the semi-finals of the  2023 FIBA World Cup.

The US had a wonderful start to their World Cup campaign , they beat New Zealand 99-72, in their next match they showed Greece who is boss as they won 109-81. US showed Jordan that they were too hot to handle as Jordan succumbed to US 62-110. This ensured that US topped Group C.  Then the US beat Montenegro  85-73. The US then suffered a shock defeat to Lithuania, 110-104. The US however made a massive comeback against Italy in the next game with a resounding win.

The US were victorious over Germany 99-91 on Aug. 20 in Abu Dhabi, rallying from a 16-point second-half deficit and needing an 18-0 run down the stretch to take control in an exhibition game. The winner on Friday will come through to the FIBA World Cup final on Sunday, 10 September in Manila’s Mall of Asia Arena, when it comes to the losing semi-finalists they will play each other on the same  day at the same venue.
