‘Fantastic Triumph’ – Fans react as B-Love Kandy trump Dambulla Aura by 5 wickets to become LPL 2023 champions
The final of the Lanka Premier League took place between B-Love Kandy (BLK) and Dambulla Aura (DMA). The coin fell in favour of DMA and they opted to bat first. They did not get off to the best of starts as Avishka Fernando was caught off Mohammad Haros off Nuvan Pradeep. Kusal Mendis hit 22 off 23 balls with three fours. Sadeera Samarawickrama came in at number three and cracked 36 off 30 balls with five fours.
Dhananjaya de Silva provided some much-needed momentum to the innings as he struck 40 off 29 balls with three sixes. Kusal Perera held one end up as the left-hander made an unbeaten 40 off 29 balls with three sixes. These contributions got DMA to a score of 147-4 in their 20 overs. Chaturanga de Silva was the best bowler on show for BLK as he took 2-25 in his four overs. Pradeep picked up 1-30 in his four overs spell.
Angelo Mathews struck an unbeaten 25 off 21 balls with three fours for B-Love Kandy
BLK got off to a great start in the run chase as Haris cracked 26 off 22 balls with three fours and one six. Kamindu Mendis hit 44 off 37 balls with three fours and one six to give BLK a strong foundation at the top of the order. Dinesh Chandimal who had played slow innings through the tournament, made 24 off 22 balls before he was caught by Pramod Madushan off Binura Fernando. Angelo Mathews who captained BLK in Wanindu Hasranga’s absence stayed till the end and made a vital unbeaten 25 off 21 balls with three fours.
Pakistan’s Asif Ali provided some late-order fireworks as he hit a quickfire 19 off 10 balls with two fours and one six. BLK reached the target with the ball to spare and were crowned LPL Champions. Noor Ahmad was the best bowler on a show for DMA. The Afghan scalped 3-27 in his four overs. For BLK, Hasaranga had a tournament to remember as he had the most runs, most wickets and most sixes. BLK is owned by an Indian actor Sanjay Dutt and they had Wasim Akram as a mentor for the LPL season. BLK has a strong Pakistan presence in its lineup.
