‘England out hua tournament se ‘ – Fans react as Sri Lanka beat England by eight wickets in ODI World Cup 2023
Defending champions England’s journey is all but over after their latest loss to Sri Lanka. The 25th game of the ODI World Cup 2023 was played on Thursday in Bengaluru. Joss Buttler won the toss and chose to bat first.
Reece Topley, Gus Atkinson, and Harry Brook made way for Chris Woakes, Liam Livingstone, and Moeen Ali. For the Sri Lankan team, it was Lahiru Kumar and Angelo Mathews who came into the side.
With this win, Sri Lanka now has accumulated four points from 5 games after their dismal start to the tournament. England on the other hand will want to reflect on everything that has gone wrong in this tournament ahead of the game versus India on Sunday.
England stand on the brink of elimination –
Opting to bat after winning the toss, the English fans would have hoped for a better start with the bat. Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow provided just that with a 45-run stand for the first wicket. Malan was out for 28 when he became the first wicket of the day falling to the gentle medium pace of Angelo Mathews.
Jonny Bairstow scored 30 runs while Joe Root was out for 3 thanks to some good fielding at point by the Sri Lankan fielders. Jos Buttler continued his bad form with the bat when he was caught behind by Mendis off Kumara for 8.
Apart from Ben Stokes who scored 43 runs none of the other batters could put up a meaningful score on the board. Moeen Ali (15) and David Willey (14) tried to stage a fightback. The Sri Lankan bowling though was right up to the mark as they bowled out England for just 156 runs in the 34th over. Lahiru Kumara picked 3/35 while Kasun Rajith and Angelo Mathews picked two wickets each.
Chasing the paltry total of 157 Sri Lanka lost Kusal Perera early for 4. Skipper Kusal Mendis mistimed a shot to be caught by Jos Buttler to give David Willey his 2nd wicket. Pathum Nissanka continued his sublime batting form scoring yet another half-century in this ODI World Cup 2023 campaign. Sadeera Samarawickrama also scored yet another half-century to end any hopes of English fightback with the ball.
England will next travel to Lucknow to take on India in a very huge game this Sunday. A loss on Sunday will confirm the exit from the tournament for the defending champions. Sri Lanka will play against Afghanistan in Pune next Monday in a bid to win and keep their tournament hopes alive.
