India announced its squad for the 2023 Asia Cup, which raised a lot of questions. Suryakumar Yadav was given a chance ahead of Sanju Samson, who was both more consistent and aggressive than the former. Tilak Varma was fast-tracked into the squad without any prior experience of playing in the format. The star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was among the players to be excluded from the squad.

Chahal has been one of the regulars in the Indian team in limited-overs cricket for a long time. Of late, India has been preferring more pacers than spinners in the XI, along with a spin bowling all-rounder like Ravindra Jadeja or Axar Patel. With the comeback of Kuldeep Yadav, there has been no place for Chahal in the playing XI of the Indian team.

The senior bowler has not helped himself either. Although the Haryana bowler has good numbers in the Indian Premier League, he has failed to match his reputation in international cricket lately. On the other hand, Kuldeep Yadav has been consistent since 2022. Due to the team combination, Chahal was left out of the 2023 Asia Cup squad of India, which was questioned by a lot of fans and former cricketers.

‘I don’t think there is any better spinner in India’ – Harbhajan Singh

The former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has questioned the exclusion of Chahal from India’s Asia Cup squad. The former World Cup winner said “Yuzvendra Chahal’s presence in the Asia Cup team was necessary. If you talk about genuine spinners, I don’t think there is any spinner in India better than Chahal in limited over formats” and questioned the selectors.

Singh, who was the main spinner of India for a long time, backed Chahal and claimed the leg spinner to be the best Indian spinner in limited-overs cricket now. Chahal expressed his disappointment over his snub from the squad by posting a cryptic message on his social media handle, which translated to “The sun will rise again”. Singh’s comments about Chahal would have given some confidence to the leg spinner to continue to perform.
