‘Ee sala 2 cup namde’ – Fans react as WPL 2024 likely to be played in home and away format in Mumbai and Bengaluru
Women’s cricket in India is changing for the good. In the last few years, the Indian team has achieved a lot as a team. In the 2017 ODI World Cup, India entered the final and came agonizingly close to winning it. In the 2020 T20 World Cup, India made it to the final. In the 2022 Commonwealth Games, India won the silver medal. These are some very good achievements.
Young talents are coming out to represent India. Some of the players in the team have been in the scheme of things only after the pandemic. Some of the experienced ones in the team have a lot of exposure in the big tournaments. To do justice to the talents in Indian cricket, the Women’s T20 challenge was introduced in 2019. There were three teams in the tournament.
Velocity, Trailblazers, and Supernova were the teams that played in the tournament. It lasted for 3 years and was replaced by a much longer version of the Women’s Premier League in 2023. The inaugural season saw some young talents make their mark. Although there was not any significant find in talents as far as India is concerned, the league was a good step towards progress.
Home and Away format to be followed in WPL 2024
Earlier this year, Mumbai Indians Women became the inaugural champions of the Women’s Premiere League. It had good attention from the fans online. But there was not much audience who watched the matches in the stadium. It was played in the double round-robin format. Mumbai and Pune acted as hosts to the tournament, which helped the logistical aspect of the game very well.
This time around, the WPL is likely to have a major change. The WPL 2023 was played in a neutral format. For WPL 2024, home and away format is likely to be considered. Reports suggest that Mumbai’s three stadiums and Bengaluru will be selected to play in the league, where teams will be allotted their home conditions. It will be the first instance of home and away conditions being implemented in the history of the league.
Here’s how the fans reacted to the news –
