India demonstrated that there is more than one way to skin a cat as they resumed their march towards knocking England out of the first Test on Friday, January 25. While Yashavi Jaiswal’s exciting innings of 76 dominated the first day’s play, India chose a more traditional approach to batting when the surface at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium turned but slowed significantly.

Yashavi Jaiswal added only 4 runs to his overnight score. At the start of day, 2 Joe Root got the wicket of inform batter Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first over. Later, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja hit fifty-plus scores. In the first over England wicketkeeper dropped KL Rahul’s catch before scoring his 14th Test half-century. while KL Rahul took advantage of the opportunity to bat at No. 4 in Virat Kohli’s absence, continuing his golden run with the bat in the middle order. Later Rahul went on to score 86 runs from 123 balls.

Except for Shubman Gill, who appeared nervous in the middle, every other Indian batsman looked at ease, not allowing Ben Stokes-led England to recover. Ravindra Jadeja, who preferred batting in the lower-middle order, looked comfortable in the middle,

With support from Shreyas Iyer who scored 35 runs, wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat scored 41 runs and Axar Patel played 35 not out, as India reached Stumps at 421 for 7, 175 runs ahead of England’s first innings total.

Hyderabad fans engaged India chased down England’s spinners near the end of the game

Each of their four spinners, including Joe Root, bowled more than 20 overs, and the visitors’ most successful bowler was a part-time off-spinner.

With the surface still producing plenty of turn and bounce, India’s lead healthy, and their spinners in top form, the home side are strong favourites to go 1-0 up in the five-match series as they begin their quest for a 17th consecutive Test series victory at home.

Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel kept the Hyderabad fans engaged as they chased down England’s spinners near the end of the game. The play was extended by half an hour, and India made sure that their total exceeded 400.
