After the completion of the T20I series, a second-string Indian team will be playing a three-match ODI series against South Africa. India’s squad for the series was announced on Sunday. Immediately after the ODI squad for the series against South Africa was announced, Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw put up a message on his Instagram story which went viral pretty quickly.

The Indian Cricket Board named Shikhar Dhawan as the skipper of the side and Shreyas Iyer as the vice-captain. The ODI side for the South Africa series bears a different look altogether as the senior players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya have been left out of the squad as they will fly to Australia to play in the 20-20 World Cup 2022.

Here’s the tweet:

The new faces in the squad include the likes of Rajat Patidar and Mukesh Kumar. Shahbaz Ahmed and Rahul Tripathi, who are also in the squad, have got the chance to play in Indian colours since the tour of Zimbabwe.

Shaw was amongst the runs in the Duleep Trophy and scored a 96-ball hundred against West Zone, recently, which turned out to be his 11th hundred in first-class cricket. He has been in good form in domestic cricket and the selectors ignoring him has come as a surprise.

“This [hundred] is special because it came after a long time,” Shaw said. “After training, and after giving myself time, [I am] coming back on track, which seems very good. I didn’t bat so much during the off-season. I was training with Vivek [Ramakrishna, Strength & Conditioning coach with Shaw’s IPL team Delhi Capitals]. I was training at the BKC [Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai]. First, we trained in Delhi and then came back and trained in Mumbai [during the off-season]. Just 12 days before the Duleep Trophy, I started batting just to get back on track with red ball [cricket]. Otherwise, I was just working on my fitness,” said Shaw.

Shaw last played for India in a three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka when a second-string side travelled to the Island nation and the squad was led by Shikhar Dhawan and coached by Rahul Dravid.
