Rohit Sharma has brushed aside his critics with a dominating and stroke-filled innings at Guwahati where the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka was being played. He came in and scored 83 off 67 balls with nine fours and three sixes. He had been battling form and fitness issues coming into this series.

The pitch was slow and it was the perfect venue for batters where they could ease into their innings and play their shots, there was not much happening in the pitch and Rohit was in his zone as he carted the Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts with disdain. Rohit’s return to form will make the fans breathe easy and they will hope that he will maintain consistency with the bat heading into the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Rohit has been battling form and fitness issues recently

Rohit had missed the last ODI in Bangladesh as he had suffered a thumb injury. He had also missed the two-match Test series against Bangladesh which India won 2-0. The shots and the flow were back in this innings. He was looking good for a big score before he got out to Dilshan Madhushanka. as he chopped one back onto his stumps. He would rue the missed chance as he has a great record against the Islanders with two double centuries against them.

He has been ridiculed by the fans for not scoring consistently and not leading the side regularly since he took over as captain of the Indian Team after a disastrous 2021 20-20 World Cup campaign from Virat Kohli. He led India in the Asia Cup where India crashed out early on before they had a shock exit against England in the semi-final at the 20-20 World Cup in Australia.

Rohit has scored 9537 runs with three double-hundreds to his name at an average of 49.80 and a strike rate of 89.64. He has 29 centuries and 47 half-centuries. He makes batting look so easy and is destructive when in full flow. The fans will be hoping the right-handed batter returns to his free-scoring ways and make him more confident as captain.
