Indian pacer Deepak Chahar sustained an ankle injury during a training session ahead of the first ODI against South Africa and could be ruled out of the series, according to reports. He is named among the standby players for India’s 20-20 World Cup squad and is likely to be ruled out of that as well.

Chahar, last month, had recovered from a lengthy injury that kept him out of the field since March. And it seems, there is more misery ahead for the 30-year-old seamer and for the Indian management, given that they had to cope with the absence of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah from the squad due to a back stress fracture.

Former India allrounder and head coach, Ravi Shastri, believes that this is an opportunity for others to step up in the absence of senior players. “There’s so much cricket is being played, and people get injured. Bumrah is injured, but it’s an opportunity for somebody else. There is nothing you can do with injury,” Shastri was quoted as saying.

We have got enough strength, a good team: Ravi Shastri

“I think we have got enough strength and we have a good team. I have always believed if you make it to the semi-finals, it could be anyone’s tournament. The endeavour would be to start well, get to the semis, and then you have got enough strength to probably win the [World] Cup, for all you know,” added the former World Cup winner.

Although team India looks a little depleted at the moment, Shastri believes that they have got enough strength. The 20-20 World Cup is set to commence on October 16 in Australia and India’s campaign is set to kick off on October 23 in a Super 12 match against Pakistan. The others in the Super 12 group, alongside India, are Bangladesh, and South Africa, with two more qualifying teams.

“I think we have got enough strength and we have a good team. I have always believed if you make it to the semi-finals, it could be anyone’s tournament. The endeavour would be to start well, get to the semis, and then you have got enough strength to probably win the [World] Cup, for all you know,” concluded the 60-year-old.
