India para-athletes, Aneesh Kumar Surendran and woman para powerlifter, Geeta have failed the dope test as banned substances were found in the urine. Kumar is the shot put IF1 category participant and Geeta is the para powerlifter. The duo have been subsequently dropped from the team with only a few days left at the start of the Commonwealth Games.

This isn’t the first time an event like this happened before the games. Recently, the likes of sprinter S Dhanalakshmi and triple jumper Aishwarya Babu were also dropped from the team on the same grounds. Meanwhile, Paralympic Committee of India Chief, Deepa Malik has told the Times of India that she is shattered to hear about the athletes taking shortcuts for success.

Malik added the committee will hold an inquiry into the matter and expressed her concern over the drug abuse even after creating awareness. She concluded by saying that the organization has a zero-tolerance policy against doping.

“I am shattered to hear the news. I feel sad for the athletes and their unnecessary need to take shortcuts. We will hold our own inquiry into the matter. We are concerned as a federation despite doing so much to create awareness about doping, hosting webinars and personally interacting with the athletes. It gives me immense pain when I hear such a thing. We have a zero-toleration policy for doping,” Deepa Malik commented on the matter and told TOI.

Talking further into the matter, Kumar was tested at his training base in Pune by the NADA officials. He consumed medicines to treat his blood pressure but failed to submit a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) certificate. On the other hand, Geeta was tested at the Jawahar Lal Nehra stadium in Delhi in June which revealed the presence of an anabolic steroid that led to her disqualification from the upcoming Birmingham Games 2022.

Aneesh Kumar is the Gold Medal in the World Military Games, played in October 2019.
