Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) met at Eden Gardens in the 33rd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. KKR won the toss and chose to bowl first. CSK were off to a perfect start, courtesy of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway. Gaikwad made 35 off 20 balls with two fours and three sixes. Conway continued his good form as he made 56 off 40 balls with four fours and three sixes. After Conway fell to Varun Chakravarthy at 109-2, the innings changed gears.
Ajinkya Rahane came in at number three and punished the KKR bowlers with absolute disdain. The 34-year-old lit up Eden Gardens with a combination of orthodox and unorthodox hitting. He scored a supreme 71 off 29 balls with six fours and five sixes. MS Dhoni by taking Rahane into the CSK fold granted him a second coming in the IPL and he took it with both hands.
Rahane was supported by fellow Mumbaikar Shivam Dube who crafted a blazing 50 off 21 balls with two fours and five sixes. The left-hand-right-hand combine put the KKR bowlers out of service. Thanks to these contributions CSK got to a huge total of 235-4 in their 20 overs.
In the second innings, KKR got off to the worst possible start when they lost Sunil Narine for a three-ball duck. He was castled by Akash Singh. N Jagadeesan went shortly after and KKR were 1-2. Venkatesh Iyer came in as impact player but could not last long as he was dismissed by Moeen Ali for a run a ball 20 with two fours and one six. Nitish Rana tried to rebuild the innings but fell to Ravindra Jadeja for 27 off 20 balls with four fours and one six.
Then Jason Roy came in and threatened to take the game away with his dazzling 61 off 26 balls with five fours and five sixes. He got out to Maheesh Theekshana. Rinku Singh scored 53 off 30 balls with three fours and four sixes. But in the end, it wasn’t enough There was no a Andre Russell heroics for KKR as he was shown the door by Matheesha Pathirana. In the end, CSK picked up a handsome 49 run win over KKR.

Never in my life I thought I’ll see this sight and it’s beautiful.
I dunno what future has to offer but Ajinkya Rahane may have got the closure he needed.
As fans, we all saw him struggle to core and this IPL season has been personal for him. #KKRvCSK pic.twitter.com/WpwZjP1FqE— Shrutika Gaekwad (@Shrustappen33) April 23, 2023
