CSK CEO denies approaching Mumbai Indians for Rohit Sharma trade

For the first time in 10 years, Rohit Sharma will participate just as a player.

Following the announcement of Hardik Pandya as the new captain of Mumbai Indians for IPL 2024, rumours have emerged suggesting possible disharmony within the team and a lack of communication regarding the leadership transition. Specifically, some reports speculate that Rohit Sharma, the former MI captain, may not have been fully informed about the decision.

Speculation also surfaced suggesting the possibility of other teams like Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals expressing interest in acquiring Rohit Sharma through potential trades.

However, during yesterday’s IPL auction in Dubai, Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan poured cold water on the trade rumours surrounding Sharma. He categorically stated that player trades are against the franchise’s core principles, emphasizing their commitment to building a team through the auction process. Viswanathan further clarified that even if they desired a trade, their current player structure wouldn’t facilitate it, effectively putting the rumours to rest.

“We don’t trade players as a principle and we also don’t have players to trade with Mumbai Indians. We have not approached them and we don’t intend to either,” Kasi Viswanathan said to popular media house, Cricbuzz.

“Everyone is emotional” – Mahela Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene, Mumbai Indians’ global head of cricket, responded with utmost calmness and clarity when questioned about the recent developments. He acknowledged the emotional rollercoaster fans were riding, their hearts heavy with the weight of a changing guard. “We respect Fans emotions. I think everyone is emotional and we have to respect that as well,” he said.

He, however, admitted that such a decision needs to be made and that Rohit’s presence will be crucial in shaping the next generation of Mumbai Indians. “But at the same time, as a franchise, you have to make those decisions. Having Rohit in the team on and off the field to guide the next generation is very important for us. He is a fabulous individual, a fabulous leader. I am sure that he will be part of that legacy who will guide that through,” he added. So, while the captain’s armband may have changed hands, Rohit’s influence within the MI family remains as potent as ever.
