He played a fair number of matches for Pakistan during 1970s and 1980s. Raja was born in a cricket playing family. His younger brother, Ramiz Raja, is a well-known cricketer in Pakistan. His father, Saleem Akhtar, and another brother, Zaeem Raja, also played first class cricket. On the 26th of August in 2006, Raja suffered a heart attack while coaching on the pitch in Marlow, Buckinghamshire and died at the age of 54.
