‘Conquerors of Europe’ – Fans react as Manchester City escape with 1-0 win over Inter Milan to lift maiden Champions League title
Manchester City lifted their maiden Champions League title after they beat Inter Milan 1-0 on Saturday at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul on Saturday. The only goal in the match was scored by Rodri, who struck in the 68th minute to ensure that City complete a famous treble after winning both the Premier League and the FA Cup this year.
This is the first time the City has got their hands on a trophy in Europe. For Pep Guardiola, this is the third time he is winning the Champions League title as a coach. He last won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2011 so the third title has been a long time coming for him. City became only the second club from England to possess the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League after Manchester United had accomplished the feat in 1999.
With the Champions League, it was a tough task to win the treble – Pep Guardiola
“It’s so difficult to win it,” Guardiola told BT Sport after the hard-fought 1-0 win. “They (his players) are really good. Be patient, I said at half-time. You have to be lucky. (Goalkeeper) Ederson or they miss it, they could draw. This competition is a coin. “It was written in the stars. It belongs to us,” the City manager added.
“After the World Cup the team made a step forward and we were there,” said Guardiola, City were in top form as they finished the campaign with just one loss in their last 28 games that they played. “We’re going to celebrate in the hotel with family and friends. Monday the parade is in Manchester. With this competition, the treble is so difficult,” Guardiola said that it was an ‘honour’ for him to join Sir Alex Ferguson in winning three Champions League titles.
City reached the final of the Champions League and triumphed this year after missing out on several occasions previously. They lost in the Champions League final to Chelsea in 2021. They also lost a very close semi-final to Real Madrid and also suffered a defeat against Tottenham Hotspur. “You have to win in Europe to be considered a really good team, and we did it,” Guardiola added.
