On 12 September 2023, India took on Sri Lanka in the ‘Super 4’ clash of the ongoing Asia Cup at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After defeating Pakistan by 228 runs on 11 September, Rohit Sharma and his men were looking for another win against the Lankans. Rohit won the toss and opted to bat first.

Both Rohit and his opening partner, Shubman Gill came to this clash after scoring fifties against the Men in Green. They also put up a 121-run partnership. So, they did not disappoint in this match as they put up an 80-run partnership. But, all eyes were on the Team India skipper as he began the innings with just 22 runs short of the 10000-run mark in ODIs.

Rohit Sharma scored 53 runs off 48 balls vs Sri Lanka

Rohit opened his account on the fourth ball of the innings with a cover drive and then, hit another four as he was on 17 runs off 26 balls. Then, on his 27th and the fifth delivery of the seventh over, Rohit hit a lofted six straight to the line against Rajitha. With that shot, he crossed the 10000-run mark in teh 50-over format and became the second-fastest batter in achieving the milestone. He reached the milestone in 241 innings while his teammate, Virat Kohli sits in the top spot by reaching the milestone in 205 innings.

In the third position also, the former Team India batter, Sachin Tendulkar sits with 259 innings. However, Rohit failed to convert his start to a big score he got out for 53 runs off 48 balls. However, he turned out to be the highest scorer as other batters failed against Sri Lanka’s spinners and they got bundled out for just 213 runs in 49.1 overs. They lost all of their 10 wickets to spinners only. In this tournament so far, Rohit has now three fifty-plus scores in four innings (vs Nepal, vs Pakistan, and vs Sri Lanka).
