‘Come back from retirement Sri Lanka Legends’ – Twitter in awe at Sri Lanka Legends dominating performance over England Legends
The 5th match of the Road Safety World Series kicked off yesterday, September 13th between the Sri Lanka Legends and the England Legends. The coin went the way of the Sri Lanka Legends and they opted to bowl first. Sri Lanka Legends were already on a roll in the competition after they beat Australia Legends by a big margin of 38 runs. This was the first match for England Legends in this edition.
Phil Mustard and Ian Bell opened the batting for England Legends. Mustard got going with a boundary first up but was dismissed by Isuru Udana with a well disguised slower ball for just 14 off 21 balls. Ian Bell was looking in good touch, but he got out trying to reverse sweep Chaturanga De Silva.
Then the willy old fox Sanath Jayasuriya was brought into the attack. He turned back the clock and showed everyone that he can still perform magic with the ball in hand. The English batters were mesmerized under his wonderful spell of left-arm spin bowling as he accounted for the wickets of Mal Loye, Darren Maddy, Tim Ambrose and Dimitri Mascarenas and he gave away just 3 runs in his 4-over spell.
Ricky Clarke came out with good intent and looked to threaten but he was dismissed leg before wicket by Jeevan Mendis. Chris Schofield and S Parry threw their bat around and in the end, England Legends somehow managed to get to 78 in their 20 overs. Kulasekara also picked up two wickets at the back end in what was a superb performance for the Sri Lanka Legends.
The chase was an easy one for the Sri Lanka Legends as they hunted down the target in just 14.3 overs, Munaweeera and Dilshan were solid at the top and put the pressure straightaway on the England bowlers. They scored 24 from 43 balls and 15 from 21 balls, respectively. Upul Tharanga was very good as he used his feet against the England spinners to play the big shots and ended up with 23 from 19. It was a solid performance from the Sri Lanka Legends.
