Premier League champions Manchester City defeated Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup final, as Ilkay Gundogan struck twice to put Cityzens only one win away from winning the treble. Gundogan scored a spectacular volley to put Manchester City ahead with just 12 seconds remaining, breaking Louis Saha’s record of 25 seconds set in the 2009 FA Cup final. Despite City having a strong start, United managed to stay in the game and draw level after Jack Grealish was penalised for handball after impeding an Aaron Wan-Bissaka pass, which was detected by VAR.

When Kevin De Bruyne found Gundogan at the edge of the box, he handled his second volleyed goal of the match beyond David de Gea, who was somewhat taken off guard, to give City the lead once again. An offside flag prevented Gundogan from scoring a hat-trick, and United came close to tying the score in stoppage time when Raphael Varane’s shot hit over the top of the crossbar.

After the pre-game show of fireworks, flags, and flares, many spectators were still settling in when Gundogan created an iconic FA Cup moment. Erling Haaland won a long ball that was blasted forward, and Gundogan pounced on the lost ball from 25 yards away to produce an incredible volley that resembled Zinedine Zidane’s renowned Champions League final goal at Hampden Park. Haaland, who offered Varane the runaround, feathered an effort wide, and De Bruyne followed suit with a shot from range as United nearly succumbed to the constant City siege.

After the break, City resumed their entire attention on the task at hand, maintaining the soccer ball with their customary certainty and quality. A player that is built for the big stage scored the goal after 51 minutes. Gundogan nearly had enough punch in response to De Bruyne’s free-kick to drive a low, cutting strike past a group of defenders and beyond of De Gea’s reach. In stoppage time, there was supposed to be one last dramatic play, but Varane’s soaring header within the six-yard box hit the crossbar and Scott McTominay was unable to pounce on the loose ball.

In order to become the second-ever team, since United in 1999, to win the Premier League, FA Cup, and European Cup treble, Pep Guardiola’s team will now play Inter Milan in the final of the Champions League the following Saturday.
