In a riveting final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Australia secured their record-extending sixth ODI World Cup title by defeating India by six wickets. Despite the heartbreak, former India captain Kapil Dev took to Instagram to express his support for current captain Rohit Sharma, commending the team’s performance and urging them to keep their spirits high.
Kapil Dev, a 1983 World Cup winner, wrote on his Instagram post, “You’ve played like champions, boys. Keep your chin up. The trophy was the ultimate in your minds, but you’ve emerged winners nonetheless. India is proud of you.” The cricket legend specifically lauded Rohit Sharma, recognizing his mastery and offering words of encouragement amid the tough loss.
“Rohit, you are a master at what you do. You have a lot of success awaiting you. It’s tough, I know, but keep your spirits up. India is with you,” Kapil Dev added in his Instagram story, showcasing his unwavering support for the captain.
Australia’s meticulous planning and execution were evident in the final, overshadowing India’s strategy and leading to their downfall in a low-scoring contest. The Australian bowlers adapted brilliantly to the slow and sluggish pitch in Ahmedabad, restricting India to a modest total of 240. Rohit Sharma’s promising start was cut short and despite partnerships between Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, the Indian batting order couldn’t capitalize.
Travis Head emerged as the hero for Australia, playing a match-winning knock of 137 runs, ensuring that Australia’s reputation for winning crucial moments and silencing home crowds remained intact. Australia’s exceptional fielding and solid contributions from players like Marnus Labuschagne allowed them to comfortably chase down the target with seven overs to spare.
Despite the defeat, Kapil Dev’s supportive words echo the sentiment of pride for India’s journey in the ODI World Cup 2023, acknowledging their champion-like performance throughout the tournament.
