‘Captain ki tareef toh karni padti hai’ – Fans react to Kumar Sangakkara’s apreciation speech for Sanju Samson
Former Sri Lanka captain and renowned wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Sangakkara, who serves as director of cricket for Indian Premier League team Rajasthan Royals, has heaped praise on the team’s star wicketkeeper-batter and captain Sanju Samson, saying that the 28-year-old cricketer “always plays for the side.”
In the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Thursday, Sanju Samson’s Rajasthan Royals crushed the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings by 32 runs in match number 37 of the Indian Premier League 2023. The Royals were able to get their season back on track, picking up two important points, and go up to the top of the IPL 2023 standings table by defeating the four-time champions.
What did Kumar Sangakara say about Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson?
After their exhilarating win against the Chennai Super Kings, Kumar Sangakara addressed the squad and spoke about the match and the takeaways. He hailed Samson’s leadership skills and hailed his intent in the batting.
He said, “Skipper, thank you for going in. I think when you watch Sanju bat, one of the things that Jos has made this observation before is that he always plays for the side. It’s not about the runs but it’s about how he scores those. He showed the intent, he led by example. So, I thought irrespective of the runs, the tone that you set and the example that you set is great for the rest of your side to follow.”
Sanju managed just 17 from as many balls versus CSK on Thursday night while playing the Royals’ second home game in Jaipur. He was unable to make a significant play. After Jos Buttler was dismissed, he came in to bat at No. 3 but kept the scoreboard going, which enabled Yashasvi Jaiswal to keep up his attacking form.
Rajasthan Royals now travel to the financial capital of the nation to face the mighty Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium and would hope to keep the winning momentum going as they look to qualify for the playoffs.

Playing according to the situation and winning games for team is more important. What's the point of intent when you throw your wicket away?
