Can Joe Root break Sachin Tendulkar’s record? Australian legend thinks so!
England started their new era in the longest format of the game with a bang. They managed to win the first Test at Lord’s against New Zealand. Their former captain, Joe Root scored an outstanding ton (115* off 170 balls) in the fourth innings to ensure this victory.
During this innings, he crossed the 10000-run landmark in Test cricket and made an entry to an elite list. In 118 Test matches (218 innings), he managed to score 10015 runs at an average of 49.57. The whole cricket fraternity heaped high praises for him through social media platforms. Former Australia great Mark Taylor was not an exception as he said that Joe Root has enough time to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of scoring most runs in the history of the Test cricket.

Taylor heaped high praises on the former England former captain for showing his best batting abilities for the last 18 months to two years. He said: “Root has minimum 5 years left in him so I think Tendulkar’s record is very achievable. He’s batting as well as I’ve ever seen him bat over the last 18 months to 2 years. He’s in the prime of his career so there’s 15,000 runs-plus for him if he stays healthy”. A journalist from Pakistan shared Taylor’s comments on his Twitter account.

India legend Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for being the highest run-scorer of all time in the red-ball format. He scored 15921 runs in 200 matches at an average of 53.78. Therefore, Mark Taylor said that Root has a minimum of five years of cricket left in him. If he continues the same way he is batting in the last few years, he could stand a good chance of breaking that record of Tendulkar. As of now, former England batter Alastair Cook is the highest runs scorer in the Test format for England by scoring 12472 runs in 161 matches at an average of 45.35.
