In the midst of severe criticism, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has decided to step down as the leader of the team. He started leading the team in white-ball formats in 2019, replacing Sarfaraz Ahmed. A year later, Azam started leading the Test side, replacing Azhar Ali. During the former’s tenure, the team played the semis of the T20 World Cup 2021, the final of the 2022 edition.

Apart from this, the Green Brigade lost the final against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2022. This year, the team finished in the Super Four. In the two World Test Championships, they failed to reach the final. In the only ODI World Cup he played as captain, the team finished fifth, losing five out of nine games. Ahead of the ongoing World Cup, during the tournament, or after their exit, the writing was on the wall for Azam as captain.

It’s a difficult decision but the right time to take the call: Babar Azam

“I vividly remember the moment when I received a call from PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. Over the past four years, I’ve experienced many highs and lows on and off the field, but I wholeheartedly and passionately aimed to maintain Pakistan’s pride and respect in the cricket world.

“Reaching the number one spot in the white-ball format was a result of the collective efforts of players, coaches, and management but I’d like to express my gratitude to passionate Pakistan cricket fans for their unwavering support during this journey.

“Today, I am stepping down as the captain of Pakistan in all formats. It’s a difficult decision but I feel it is a right time for this call.

“I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats. I am here to support the new captain and the team with my experience and dedication.

“I want to express my sincere thanks to the Pakistan Cricket Board for entrusting me with this significant responsibility,” the 2017 Champions Trophy winner wrote on Twitter.
