Hagley Oval, Christchurch, witnessed another dominant performance from the New Zealand Black Caps as they beat Pakistan by seven wickets to take a 4-0 lead in the 5-match series. Chasing a modest target of 159, the Kiwis cruised to the finish line courtesy of a crucial 139-run partnership between Daryl Mitchell (72*) and Glenn Phillips (70*).

Pakistan’s innings got off to a shaky start as they lost Saim Ayub cheaply. Babar Azam, despite reaching 19, couldn’t convert it into a big score, falling victim to Adam Milne. Muhammad Rizwan, who scored an unbeaten 90 played a lone hand until the very end where he found some good support from Mohammad Nawaz. Nawaz ended up scoring 21 off just 9 deliveries to help Pakistan post a respectable total of 158. Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson picked up two wickets each while Mitchell Santner kept things incredibly tight with his sensational and renowned accuracy.

In response, the New Zealand chase began terribly. Finn Allen, who had smashed a record-breaking 137 in the previous match, fell in the very first over and he was swiftly followed by Tim Seifert and Will Young. Shaheen Shah Afridi was the man who did the damage, claiming all three wickets to reduce the Kiwis to 20-3 However, Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips then took charge and ensured that from then on, New Zealand dominated proceedings. The Pakistani bowlers lacked spine as they hit inconsistent areas and that resulted in another drubbing.

New Zealand eye whitewash

The five-match series has been a one-sided affair thus far, with New Zealand displaying their class and dominance throughout. Pakistan have been lacklustre and the consistency and firepower to challenge the Black Caps has not been there by any stretch of imagination. New Zealand will now head into the final T20I to inflict a 5-0 whitewash on the visitors. Pakistan have had a torrid run across formats and will thus, be more desperate than determined to earn a consolation win. Pakistan will also need to go back to the drawing board and address their inconsistencies before the upcoming global showpiece event the T20 World Cup.
