‘Bechare ka career start hi hua hai’ – Fans react to Dawid Malan becoming oldest World Cup centurion for England
Match number seven of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw England take on Bangladesh in Dharamshala. The game on Tuesday was an important and key clash for the defending World Champions. The English had lost their opening game of the tournament to New Zealand by a huge margin in Ahmedabad.
Bangladesh on the other hand had won their opening encounter against Afghanistan on Saturday. Shakib Al Hasan had led his side to a seven-wicket win at the same venue. The Bangladeshi team decided to field first after winning the toss.
Ben Stokes wasn’t included as he the English all-rounder is still not fit. Reece Topley was drafted into the playing XI for Moeen Ali. The Bangladeshi team also made one change to their team with Mahedi Hasan replacing Mahmudullah.
Dawid Malan scores a superb century on his way to a historic ton
Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan opened the innings for England against the Bangladeshi seam attack. The pair started slow but upped the ante once they got the measure of the pitch. The English openers added 115 runs for the opening wicket in just 17.5 overs.
Bairstow was his aggressive self as he was out for 52 runs from 59 deliveries with the help of 8 hits to the fence. The first wicket fell when Bairstow was bowled by Bangladeshi skipper Shakib Al Hasan.
Dawid Malan who has played 22 games so far scored his sixth ODI ton for England. At 36-years-old Malan became the oldest World Cup centurion for England. The left-handed batter scored his first ton of the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament. Malan’s knock of 140 came off 107 balls with 16 fours and five sixes.
Joe Root and Dawid Malan added 151 runs for the second wicket in just 117 deliveries. The English opener was looking good for a bigger but his knock came to an end when he was on 140. Mahedi Hasan went through the defence of Malan to knock his leg stump out of the ground.
Jos Buttler and his men will be looking to win this game as they sit at the bottom of the points table. A win on Tuesday by a huge margin will breathe life into England’s World Cup dreams. Bangladesh on the other hand will want to continue their winning streak going.
