Australia whitewashed New Zealand 3-0 in the ODI series after winning the third ODI by 25 runs on Sunday. On a surface that wasn’t the easiest to bat on, Australia did a great job to post a total of 267 runs in the first innings. They didn’t make a great start as both Josh Inglis (10 off 16) and Aaron Finch (5) got out cheaply.

Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne then joined hands to make a stunning recovery. The duo paced the innings beautifully and added 118 runs for the third wicket. Smith went to score a sensational ton, while Labuschagne made a substantial contribution of 52 runs in 78 balls. While Ferguson had him in the 34th over, Smith carried on and went on to score 105 runs in 131 balls.

Alex Carey’s unbeaten 42 off 43, later, helped Australia notch 267 at the end of the first innings. Unlike the first two matches, New Zealand managed to make a pretty good start. Fin Allen and Devon Conway added 49 runs for the first wicket before Abbott sent Conway (21) back to the hut.

Three overs later, Finn Allen (35) too departed, leaving New Zealand at 57 for 2. Tom Latham (10) failed to deliver, while Kane Williamson, unfortunately, got run-out in a bizarre mix-up. Glenn Phillips showed his class with some beautiful shots but couldn’t stay till the end. Besides, the likes of James Neesham (36) and Mitchell Santner (30) also couldn’t convert the start into a big scores. As a result, they fell 25 runs short, in the end.

As for Australia’s bowling unit, Mitchell Starc picked 3 for 60, while the likes of Cameron Green and Sean Abbott claimed two wickets each. Skipper Aaron Finch ends his ODI career with a 3-0 win over New Zealand. The Aussies will now head to India to play a T20I series, while New Zealand will host Bangladesh and Pakistan for a T20I series.
