The news is going from bad to worse for India and also for Shreyas Iyer. First, it was reported that Iyer will miss the Indian T20 League. It is also said that he will be ruled out of the Test Championship final. Now, another report from the Times of India has stated that Iyer has been ruled out for four to five months due to a back injury.

Iyer was also ruled out in the limited overs leg against New Zealand. Iyer had shown good promise in ODIs and filled in the all-important number 4 spot. But he has had shot ball problems recently and this has put him below in the pecking order. The -28-year-old has made 666 runs in 10 Test matches for India and has done well in the middle order.

Kolkata are without a captain at present in the absence of Shreyas Iyer

The absence of Iyer causes problems for two entities. One is the Kolkata franchise in the Indian T20 League, which is without a captain at present. There are reports that Nitesh Rana could lead the side in the absence of Iyer. With the right-handed batter also missing the Test Championship final, it has caused big holes in India’s middle order. Rishabh Pant has been sidelined for a long time as he is still recovering from his injuries. With Iyer to ruled out, the middle order looks very thin.

India will also be without Jasprit Bumrah on the bowling front. Bumrah is yet to recover from his back injury. The pace spearhead had missed the 20-20 World Cup in Australia because of the injury. These are three vital cogs in the Indian Test team’s wheel. They will be missed dearly. The national side does not have a safekeeping option at this point in time. KS Bharat did not set the ball rolling in his debut series against Australia.

The Indian Test side has also had collapses with their top order recently. The batters have looked jittery and uncertain upfront. The Test side has relied upon the lower-order and individual brilliance to bail them out which is not a good sign. The final will take place at the Oval in England in June.
