Asia Cup 2022: Sri Lankan support staff perplexed with third umpire over controversial no-ball call

The India-Sri Lanka clash produced another thriller that went down to the wire as the Lankans prevailed in another edge-of-the-seat contest. But the contest had its share of controversy when India was batting, The incident unfolded when India batter Deepak Hooda was dismissed off a short delivery, only to be handed a reprieve by the third umpire, who deemed the delivery as a no-ball. The Sri Lankan dressing room was not happy and was perplexed by the umpire’s decision.

India had the first bat at Dubai and was given early jitters by the quick dismissals of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. But Indian skipper Rohit Sharma took control of the innings with a whirlwind knock before getting dismissed in an attempt to up the ante. The Men in Blue looked to capitalize on their skipper’s knock and were looking to score quick runs in the end.

Deepak Hooda, who has impressed with the bat for India in the recent past, was looking to do the same in the Sri Lanka game. When Dasun Shanaka bowled a short ball and Hooda edged it to the keeper it was given out, but the Indian batter was told to wait by the on-field umpires as the TV umpire checked for a no-ball for height. The umpire ruled in favour of the batter, deeming the delivery illegitimate as Shanaka had already bowled the one legal bouncer allowed in the over.

The decision did not go down well with the Sri Lankan coaching staff as the head coach Chris Silverwood was seen arguing with the third umpire after the controversial decision was given of the controversial decision along with other members of the coaching staff. But the decision did not come back to haunt Sri Lanka as Hooda was dismissed in the next over by Dilshan Madhushanka for just three runs.

In the end, India lost the game against Sri Lanka as they were not penetrative with the new ball and leaked runs at the start. Chahal brought India back in the game with a good spell but Sri Lanka was too good for India as they won the encounter by 6 wickets and booked a place in the final for Asia Cup 2022.
