The Indian T20 league does justice to its tagline of “where talent meets opportunity”. This is due to the fact that many unheard names are given a platform to showcase their skills in the tournament every year. Players who impress the selectors are given a direct entry into the Indian Cricket Team. Every year, many players are handed their debut cap for the Indian team on the basis of their performance in the world’s most competitive T20 League.
One such player who received plaudits for his bowling in the past two seasons of the league is Arshdeep Singh. The left-arm seamer has shown dramatic improvement in terms of his accuracy and economical bowling at the death. His marvellous performance finally got him a maiden call-up from the Indian team for the T20I series against Ireland. Despite not getting a chance in the series, the 23-year-old bowler was retained in the squad for the limited-overs series against England and West Indies.
Arshdeep finally made his international debut against England in the first T20I on Thursday. The seamer straight away entered the record books as he started his international career with a maiden over. He joined Ajit Agarkar and Jhulan Goswami who’ve also achieved this feat before him.
Arshdeep impressed everyone with his control and variations. He bowled his first over against one of the most explosive batsmen in international cricket ‘Jason Roy’ and looked completely unfazed by the occasion. He ended up with figures of 2 for 18 in his 3.3 overs.
The left-arm seamer came into the limelight after a successful season in the Indian T20 league in 2021 as he picked up 18 wickets in 12 games at an average of 19. He once again impressed in the recent season of the league with his ability to bowl at the death and keep the batsmen guessing with his numerous variations. Arshdeep bowled with an economy of 7.70 in 14 games picking up 10 wickets. The 23-year-old seamer has made a big statement with his impressive debut and is taking giant strides to be in contention for the upcoming 20-20 world cup.
