Apex board implements new rule for video referral of stumping dismissals

A new rule has been implemented in cricket regarding the stumping dismissals.

Apex board implements a new rule for video referral of stumping dismissals, where the front-on would not be provided. The rule has come to the existence as the teams were seen using third umpire referrals for even the normal reviews of catches, which was actually not ideal. The catching appeal were to be done using the DRS. But some teams took the advantage of the technology.

In one of the Test matches between India and Australia last year in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, Alex Carey had appealed for a stumping dismissal for the third umpire. As a result, the decision was taken upstairs. Upon front-on vision it was found out that the batter was out caught behind. Technically, Australia got the wicket of the batter without using the DRS.

To avoid such decisions in the upcoming days, the apex board has decided to introduce a new rule where the stumping appeal would only include side-on vision and not the front-on vision. Teams that wish to appeal for a caught behind must go through the DRS procedure. The new rule is effective from the 12th of December 2023. It might be a good decision considering the advantage the fielding side could have got.

‘The change confines a stumping review to only check for stumped’ – Apex board

“The change confines a stumping review to only check for stumped, therefore preventing the fielding team a free review for other modes of dismissal (i.e, caught behind) without choosing a player review,” wrote the Apex cricket body in its release statement.  There has been a rule change in terms of usage of the concussion substitute. The teams will have to be wary of the new rule.

The bowler that gets replaced as a concussion substitute over an injured bowler will not be allowed to bowl if the former was suspended from the play. There has additionally been a rule which added that the time for concussion check and treatment restricted to 4 minutes per team. The Indian cricket board has decided to continue with the 2-bouncer per over and the dead-ball rule in its domestic tournaments.
