In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Sandeep Reddy Vanga explained why Abrar (Bobby Deol), the antagonist of his new film Animal, is a Muslim despite coming from a Sikh family. Abrar is the cousin of Rannvijay Singh, the main character in the movie (played by Ranbir Kapoor). The movie has been making waves on social media and has been dominating the box office.
Sandeep clarified that Bobby’s character needed to change due to the psychological trauma in his past. He stated, “I’ve seen people who enter a zero confidence zone approached by people who tell them to go to a church or see a baba. He’ll give them some Taweez (pendant), change their name, etc. I’ve witnessed people who have experienced a great deal of loss alter their religion. At their lowest, they perceive it as a total identity shift, like a new birth. We never witness anyone convert to Hinduism, but we do witness many people convert to Islam and Christianity.”
According to Sandeep, the concept gave him the ability to represent Abrar as someone who can have several wives and children. He stated, “Since Muslims allow for the marriage of multiple wives, I reasoned that I would use this. I could have several cousins with distinct facial features, which would increase the drama. That’s the sole explanation. He clarified that he had no intention of portraying a Muslim negatively.”
Abrar (Bobby Deol) in Animal becomes silent following the devastating loss of his father. He declares war on Ranvijay following the death of his brother. It becomes clear later in the movie that they are related. In a scene from the movie, Abrar is shown becoming enraged and venting his feelings on his wives after learning of his brother’s passing. He continues by pressuring his new bride. Some quarters have voiced criticism regarding the marital rape scene.
One of the biggest hits of the year is Animal. Alongside Triptii Dimri, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, and Ranbir Kapoor, it stars Bobby. A son’s and his father’s tense relationship serves as the backdrop for the movie.
