‘Andre Russell you magician’ – Fans react as Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford star in Montreal Tigers GT20 title win over Surrey Jaguars
The Global T20 League in Canada came to an end with Surrey Jaguars going up against the Montreal Tigers in the final. The Tigers won the toss and chose to bowl. Surrey Jaguars got off to a brisk start with Mohammad Haris hitting 23 off 22 balls with two fours and one six. He fell LBW to Aayan Khan when the score was 35. Litton Das was Khan’s second victim as he fell for 12 off 13 balls with one four. Iftikhar Ahmed could not set the stage on fire as he was caught by Abbas Afridi off Carlos Brathwaite.
Even though wickets were falling consistently at the other end. Jaguars found a hero in 56 off 57 balls with three fours. Ayaan Khan provided some much-needed impetus to the innings as he hit 26 off 15 balls with two sixes. The Jaguars finished on 130-5 in their 20 overs. Khan was the best bowler as he picked up 2-21 in his four overs. In the second innings, the Tigers lost Muhammed Waseem for a duck. He was cleaned up by Spencer Johnson.
Shrefane Rutherford hit an unbeaten 38 off 29 balls with three fours and two sixes for Montreal Tigers
Skipper Chris Lynn steadied the ship for his side as he hit 31 off 35 balls with three fours and one six. He was cleaned up by Iftikhar. Srimantha Wijeratne was the third wicket to fall after he made 12 off 15 balls with two fours. Dilpreet Singh was Iftikhar’s second victim. Sherfane Rutherford took his team home as he smashed an unbeaten 38 off 29 balls with three fours and two sixes.
In an interesting development, Dipendra Singh came in at number 6 but made 16 off 17 balls with one four. He retired out as he was not timing the ball well. This allowed Andre Rusell to come in. The big-hitting West Indian hit an unbeaten 20 off 6 balls with one four and two sixes. when Tigers needed 12 to win off 5 balls. Russell hit two sixes in the last five deliveries. This meant that the Montreal Tigers beat the Surrey Jaguars by 5 wickets and won the GT20.
