‘An Outstanding performance from New Zealand’ – Twitter in awe as New Zealand register convincing 65-run win over Sri Lanka
New Zealand registered a big win over Sri Lanka by 65 runs and headlines were made by Glenn Philips for his 104 and Trent Boult for his four-wicket haul. They now have 5 points from three games.
Sri Lanka and New Zealand squared off against each other in the 27th match of the 20-20 World Cup 2022. The match was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground. New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat first.
They were not off to the greatest of starts as Finn Allen, Devon Conway and Kane Willamson all found their way back to the hut with just 15 runs on the board. The revival for the Kiwis was brought about by Daryl Mitchell and Philips who scored 104 and 22 respectively.
Philips tore apart the Sri Lankan bowling as he scored 104 off just 64 balls with 10 fours and four sixes. Mitchell played second fiddle by supporting Philips in the middle and scored an unassuming 22 off 24 balls without a boundary.
When Philips was dismissed, the Blackcaps were 162-6. Mitchell Santner played a quick innings of 11 off 5 balls with one six which allowed New Zealand to end up on 167-7 from their 20 overs. Kasun Rajitha and Wanindu Hasaranga starred with the ball for Sri Lanka picking up 2-23 and 1-22 from their four-over spells.
Sri Lanka lost their first 4 wickets for just 8 runs on the board
In the second innings, Sri Lanka were behind the eight ball as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals which ensured they were nowhere close to the target set by the Kiwis. If it was Philips with the bat in the first innings, then it was Boult with the ball as he wreaked havoc picking up 4-13 in his four overs. I
Santner also struck twice in his four overs conceding only 21 runs. As did Ish Sodhi who picked up 2-21 from his spell of 2.3 overs. In the end, New Zealand recorded a massive win by 65 runs as the Blackcaps folded the islanders out for only 102 in 19.2 overs. New Zealand have clearly shown that they are the team to beat with two dominating performances so far in the 20-20 World Cup 2022.
