Cristiano Ronaldo hoards the limelight wherever he goes. Despite being past his prime, the Portuguese footballer is still the most popular sportsperson in the world. Currently in Qatar, the 37-year-old is hoping to win a World Cup which continues to elude him.

On Wednesday, Ronaldo wrote another page to his World Cup campaign after his Portugal side thumped Switzerland 6-1 to move into the quarterfinal of the mega event. The former Real Madrid player, however, started on the bench in the Round of 16 match contrary to many fans’ expectations.

Ronaldo, however, was still able to exude the extent of his popularity from the dugout as the majority of cameras pointed towards him when the team sang the national anthem. He was later able to come onto the pitch with applause that could overshadow that of a World Cup win.

Ronaldo’s start from the bench however seems to have not gone well with his girlfriend and partner Georgina Rodriguez as she made some scathing remarks on Instagram.

“Congratulations Portugal. While the 11 players sang the anthem, all eyes were on you. What a shame not to have been able to enjoy the best player in the world for 90 minutes,” wrote Ronaldo’s partner.

Here’s the Instagram post:

“The fans did not stop asking for you and shouting your name. May God and your dear friend Fernando continue hand in hand and make us vibrate one more night,” concluded Rodriguez. Ronaldo also posted a cryptic post after their win against Switzerland.

“Amazing day for Portugal, with a historic result in the biggest contest in world soccer. Luxury exhibition by a team full of talent and youth. Congratulations to our national team. The dream is alive! To the very end! Come on, Portugal,” Ronaldo wrote on his Instagram after their 6-1 win.

Interestingly, Ronaldo had posted an inspirational message on Instagram before the match. He had written, “Today is for Portugal! For the Portuguese! For us and our! Today is for all the dreams we carry in each of us! Let’s go with everything!

Portugal have qualified for the quarterfinals and will not play against Morocco for a place in Semi-final.
