Today, as India took the field on Day 1 of the Ranchi Test vs England, Akash Deep became the 313th player to earn the coveted Test cap. He received his cap from India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid just ahead of the toss.

Ahead of his debut, Akash, who plays for Bengal, featured in 30 first-class games, picking up 104 wickets along the way at an average of 23.58. He was sensational in Bengal runs to the Ranji Trophy Final in 2019 and 2023, emerging as the team’s highest wicket-taker. His consistent domestic performances along with his recent returns for India A against the visiting England Lions led to his senior team selection.

Akash’s debut now is a reward for all the struggles that he has gone through in the last few years. The road has by no means been easy for him as he has had to deal with plenty of hardships. Akash’s father dreamt of a secure future for his son and envisioned a government job as the stability it offered was a stark contrast to their hand-to-mouth existence. He urged Akash to prepare for the Bihar police constable exams, or at least settle for the Class IV peon position. Cricket, his son’s passion, was seen as a frivolous pursuit, a luxury that they couldn’t afford.

In a cruel twist of fate, both Akash’s father and elder brother passed away within six months, leaving him as the sole breadwinner for his two younger nieces. The weight of responsibility settled on Akash’s shoulders, heavier than any cricket ball he ever gripped. Post the tragedy, Akash started playing tennis and leather ball games and managed to earn around INR 20000 which allowed him to make ends meet.

His talent couldn’t remain hidden for long. Local coaches recognized the raw pace and fire in his bowling. They honed his skills, instilled discipline, and nurtured his dream. Akash, fueled by responsibility, grabbed every opportunity with both hands. Today, Akash Deep stands tall, not just as a fast bowler who can clock high speeds, but as a symbol of hope and resilience.

Akash Deep makes it count!

Akash Deep has taken to Test cricket just like a fish takes to water as he has already picked up three wickets out of the four that have fallen so far in the day. His first wicket would have been that of Zak Crawley whom he castled with a peach only for replays to show that he had overstepped. However, just like he has done with the other hurdles and disappointments in life, Akash didn’t allow the no-ball to plague what lay ahead.

He picked up the wickets of Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Crawley (again) to reduce the visitors to 57-3. More than the wickets, his accuracy and precision along with his variations have stood out. His performance has earned him high praise from plenty of fans and pundits on social media who are all hoping that this is just the start of a long and successful Test career.
