Afghanistan gave a shocking defeat to Pakistan in the semifinal of the Asian Games 2023. The two South Asian teams took part in cricket in the Asian Games 2023 in the semifinal. Initially in the tournament, both the teams got a bye due to higher rankings. But the two teams met on a big stage in the semifinal and took on each other in Hangzhou.

On a slow wicket, Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bowl first. The decision turned out to be a good one, as Afghanistan restricted Pakistan to a total of 115 runs in 18 overs. A fantastic bowling performance from the entire bowling unit of Afghanistan meant that Pakistan had no chance of posting a good total. Afghanistan spinners were amazing with the ball.

Fareed Ahmad was the pick of the bowlers, who claimed 3/15 in his 3 overs. Qais Ahmad shined with the ball and claimed 2/11 in his 3 overs. Karim Janat and Zahir Khan did their jobs as well, clinched 1/12 and 2/20 in their 2 and 3 over spells respectively. Ashraf bowled an economical spell and conceded only 17 runs in his spell.

Gulbadin Naib’s All-round performance pushes Afghanistan for victory 

It was Gulbadin Naib who shined as an All-rounder in the match. Bowling first, Naib claimed the wicket of Aamer Jamal and conceded only 29 runs in his spell of 4 overs. Chasing 116, Afghanistan was reduced to 71/5 after 12.1 overs. In came Naib and played a fine cameo. The Afghanistan skipper hit some big blows and put the pressure back on Pakistan. On the big day, Naib stepped up and helped Afghanistan to clinch the match.

With 13 balls still left in the match, Naib and Ashraf saw off the chase for Afghanistan, as they denied Pakistan a place in the final. The men in blue will now face other men in blue, India, in the final. The big clash might prove to be a good one, as Afghanistan has some experienced campaigners in their lineup like Naib, Shahzad, Noor Ali, and Janat. After losing a lot of close games against Pakistan, naib would be happy to finish one.
