On 3rd August 2023, former India player Manoj Tiwary announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The Sports minister of West Bengal took to his Twitter and thanked everyone on his journey. While it was not an unexpected call, as the 37-year-old is the Minister of State for Youth Services and Sports of West Bengal, the new announcement of Tiwary has surprised everyone.

It is difficult to understand how Tiwary can play for a team, despite being in a post like the Sports minister. According to the reports, Tiwary has communicated with the cricket board of West Indies and convinced them to play for the team of Bengal in domestic cricket. The news of the new announcement from Tiwary has taken the internet by storm.

Manoj Tiwary had a very good record in first-class cricket, especially for Bengal. In 141 First class matches, Tiwary scored 9909 runs at a very good average of 48.6. In List A cricket, the 37-year-old scored 5581 runs in 169 matches at a batting average of 42.3, at a batting strike rate of 83.5. In all T20s, Tiwary scored 3436 runs in 184 matches at an average of 28.4, at a strike rate of 116.4.

An example of premature decision of retirement

The Howrah-born cricketer played 15 international matches for India in the limited-overs formats. In ODIs, the middle-order batter played 12 matches and scored 287 runs at an average of 23.92, at a strike rate of 71.22, including a hundred and a fifty. In T20Is, Tiwary scored 15 runs in 17 balls in the only innings he played.

Lately, there are many examples of players retiring in a hurry or haste and reconsidering it upon thinking the second time. Moeen Ali, who had announced his retirement from test cricket, returned to play the Ashes 2023 for England upon a request from Ben Stokes. Tamim Iqbal had announced his retirement from cricket after losing to Afghanistan and took back the decision just a day later after meeting the Bangladeshi PM.
