‘Adopted son of Tami Nadu’ – Fans react as Sunil Gavaskar speaks about unbelievable amount of love that MS Dhoni receives in Chennai
Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been a bonafide great in the Indian T20 League. The former Indian captain has been with Chennai since 2008 and has never looked back. Tamil Nadu’s capital city’s based side did not have an icon player like the rest of the franchises in 2008. The Yellow Army was free to bid for MS Dhoni and they did so. This has been an unbreakable bond and he is one of Chennai’s favorite sons.
Dhoni has made Chennai a very successful franchise. The four-time winners have qualified for the playoffs nine times. The team has won the most number of titles after Mumbai who have won five under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. Meanwhile, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar said in an interview that “The love for MS Dhoni from people in Chennai is unbelievable. The people of Chennai have immense respect for Dhoni and regard him as one of their own.
Chennai will play the first game of the Indian T20 League 2023 against Gujarat on March 31
Chennai will play its first game against the defending champions Gujarat in the Indian T20 League 2023. The game will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. A full house will be expected as some reports have stated that the 2023 season will be Dhoni’s last. However, both Shane Watson and Deepak Chahar have rubbished claims and said that Dhoni could play till 2024 as quoted by News 18.
The Men in Yellow did not have the best of seasons in 2020 and 2022. In 2020, Chennai finished seventh with six wins and eight losses. The franchise accumulated only 12 points that year. In 2022, Chennai finished ninth with four wins and 10 losses with 8 points. Last year, Ravindra Jadeja was made captain in place of Dhoni and the experiment backfired. The extra responsibility had a huge impact on Jadeja’s all-round performance.
Halfway through the season, Jadeja stepped down as captain and MS Dhoni took over the reins once again. There was some friction between Jadeja and the Chennai management with how he stepped down as captain. Some reports in 2022 said Jadeja might move out of Chennai come 2023. But it was all sorted out in the end and Jadeja remains a vital part of Chennai.
