Pakistan vs Sri Lanka is currently underway at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. Wicket-keeper batter Kusal Mendis scored a brilliant century in the ongoing match against the 1992 World Champions. He became the fastest Sri Lankan to score a hundred in the ODI World Cup history. Mendis surpassed the legendary Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara’s record of 70 balls, 117 in the 2015 World Cup. He made the century in just 65 balls hitting 13 fours and four sixes. He also became the only Sri Lankan batter to hit a century against Pakistan in ODI World Cups.

The batter was eventually dismissed for 122 runs off 77 balls, hitting 14 fours and 6 sixes. He has been in sensational form for the Islanders. In the Asia Cup 2023. He was their highest run-getter in the tournament and played a crucial innings of 91 runs against Pakistan in a must-win game. Sri Lanka did not get the expected start in their second match as they lost their opener Kusal Perera for a duck.

But Mendis and Pathum Nissanka stitched a 107-run partnership before the latter was dismissed by Pakistan’s vice-captain Shadab Khan for 51 runs. Mendis did not stop after the dismissal of Nissanka he and Sadeera Samarawickrama also built a century-run stand between them. The latter also scored a century off 82 balls.

Sri Lanka eye big against Pakistan

Dasun Shanaka‘s side is coming from a hefty defeat against South Africa in the opening game. The Proteas batters smacked the Lankan bowlers all around the park and posted a total of 428/5 in their 50 overs, which is also the highest-ever total in the ODI World Cup history. Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram all three batters scored a century. They were handed a defeat of 102 runs at Delhi’s Arun Jaitely Stadium.

Sri Lanka have not won against Pakistan in the World Cup history. They would like to end this drought and get back in momentum with a win in this World Cup.
