The Indian T20 League gifts Indian cricket several talented players every year. The T20 extravaganza is considered the perfect platform for all youngsters to boost their cricketing careers. Few of the top performers from the cash-rich league are given direct entry into the Indian Cricket team. However, if the players fail to grab the opportunity, they’re shown the door out of the team in no time. Former Indian cricketer Akash Chopra took to Twitter on Friday and criticised the team management for dropping Venkatesh Iyer similarly from the Indian squad.

Chopra was unhappy with the selectors for dropping Iyer after his lacklustre performances in the Indian T20 League 2022. Iyer, who used to open for the Kolkata franchise, was given the role of the finisher in the Indian team.

“An example of picking players based on Indian T20 League performances & then asking them to perform a different role…and then drop them completely after failing in the Indian T20 League (while playing a different role). Meet Ventakesh Iyer. Opened for Kolkata Franchise. Got picked as a finisher…and then dropped!!!,” Chopra wrote.

Iyer was touted as a replacement for Hardik Pandya

Iyer made his international debut in a T20I against New Zealand at Jaipur. He amassed 133 runs in seven innings at an average of 33.25 and a strike rate of 162.19. He also picked up five wickets in the format at an average of 15. He further represented India in two ODIs and managed to score just 24 runs in two innings.

The 27-year-old was touted as the replacement for all-rounder Hardik Pandya after his breakthrough season in the Indian T20 League 2021 where he scored 370 runs in 10 matches at an average of 41. He also scored four half-centuries and picked up three wickets for the Kolkata franchise.

Following his dream run, the all-rounder had a contrasting season in the Indian T20 league 2022 scoring just 182 runs in 12 matches at an average of 16.55 and a strike rate of 107. After having a forgettable season, the Madhya Pradesh player was immediately dropped from the side and has not been recalled so far.
