‘Aaj bhi sab kuchh waise ka waisa hi hai’ – Fans troll Bangalore after 60-run loss to Delhi in 2nd match of WTL
Meg Lanning’s 43-ball 72, Shafali Verma‘s 45-ball 84 and Tara Norris’s five-wicket haul saw the Delhi franchise get off to a great start in the inaugural edition of the Women’s T20 League, winning by 60 runs against Bangalore franchise in the second match of the tournament on Sunday, March 5. The Delhi players scored a huge total of 223 runs for the loss of two wickets by crushing the Bangalore bowlers. In reply, Smriti Mandhana’s team tried to fight back but ended up with just 163 runs by losing 8 wickets in 20 overs.
Bangalore captain Smriti Mandhana won the toss and opted to bowl against Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals. Lanning and Shafali Verma proved Mandana’s decision wrong as they put on a 162-run partnership for the first wicket. The Australian scored 72 runs off 43 balls with 14 boundaries while Indian opener Shafali Verma scored 84 runs off 45 balls with 4 sixes and 10 boundaries. The brilliant show by the duo was carried forward by South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp (39* off 17) and Jemimah Rodrigues (22* off 15) and took the team to a mammoth total. Other than Heather Knight who took 2 wickets, Bangalore bowlers could not put up a decent performance in their tournament opener.
In reply, the Bangalore batters started with good intent as captain Smriti (23 off 35) and Sophie Devine (14 off 11) tried to take on the Delhi bowlers in the second over. But chasing a huge total, they couldn’t carry on the momentum forward. Bangalore suffered a batting collapse immediately after Australian star all-rounder Ellyse Perry’s wicket as they lost five wickets for just 7 runs. Left-arm pace bowler Norris, who took five wickets (5/29), broke the batting line-up of the opponents. The United States star was also awarded the player of the match award for her scintillating performance. England’s Alice Capsey took 2 wickets and Inida’s Shikha Pandey took one wicket each.
Meanwhile, Twitter was flooded with trolls and memes for the Bangalore team who lost their first match of the tournament. Here are some reactions from fans:
