‘A true cricket icon’ – Fans react as Virat Kohli becomes most popular cricketer and third most popular sports star in 2023

Virat Kohli is undoubtedly the most popular cricketer in the world. The batter from Delhi has immense appeal among the fans. Being the greatest cricketer of his time, the 34-year-old enjoys a lot of popularity in the world. As a batter, the middle-order batter is the greatest of his time considering his legacy across all formats of the game.  

After the 2015 World Cup, Virat Kohli rose to immense popularity. While MS Dhoni was still the most popular at the time, the peak of Kohli the batter simply gave him a huge fanbase which went crazy about his batsmanship. The fan base just grew and grew huge. From 2016 to 2019, when Virat was at his peak, he was simply unstoppable in any format of the game.   

Despite not-so-great performances from 2020 to 2022, the batter from Delhi has still maintained his fan base, which is growing as fast as ever. In the last few years, Kohli has not just been the most popular cricketer but has attained the status of being one of the most popular athletes in the world. Both statistically and in terms of appeal, Virat has been very popular in the recent past.

Lately, Hopper HQ conducted a survey of the popularity of sportspersons from different sports across the world. According to the survey, the former Indian captain has emerged as the most popular cricketer and the third most popular sportsperson in the world in 2023. The star batter is the only cricketer to feature in the survey among the top 10 popular sportspersons.  

The list features some of the top athletes in the world in different sports. Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of Portugal’s Football team, is the most popular athlete in the world. Following him is Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina’s football team, who helped his team to win the 2022 Football World Cup. The Brazilian Footballer Neymar Jr is fourth on the list. The American Basketball player Lebron James is fifth on the list.
