‘A fine effort after losing five early wickets’- Fans laud England for brilliant recovery on Day 1 of Ranchi Test
Day 1 of the ongoing Ranchi Test between India and England has ended with the visitors in a good position at 302-7. Joe Root emerged as the star of the day as he slammed his 31st Test century to rescue England from a precarious position.
Earlier, England’s captain, Ben Stokes had won the toss and decided that his side would bat first. However, the batters did not validate the decision as England found themselves reeling at 112-5 at one point in time. Akash Deep, the debutant was the chief destroyer as he picked up three early wickets to announce his arrival on the international stage. His wickets included those of Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley.
The duo of Joe Root and Ben Foakes offered resistance, sharing a crucial, potentially match-defining stand worth 113 runs for the sixth wicket. Foakes was dismissed three runs short of a half-century but Root carried on to construct a masterclass. He ended up scoring an unbeaten 106 off 226 deliveries with the help of 9 boundaries. It was a typical Root innings like many more that he’s played over the years.
This was his 10th Test century against India, the most by any batter in the history of the game. Ollie Robinson played a brilliant hand, sharing an alliance worth 57 runs with the former skipper. Unbeaten on 31, Robinson played some magnificent shots, making full use of his height and reach.
England in the driver’s seat
While it would seem like a premature evaluation, the pitch hasn’t looked like an easy one to bat and hence, England are in pole position heading into Day 2. What would give Stokes and Co a lot of delight is how the team fought after being put in a tough spot by the hosts. tomorrow, the visitors will be looking to add a few more runs to the total to add pressure on Rohit Sharma’s Indian side.
India on the other hand, will be utterly disappointed to have allowed England a way back into the game after being in a dominating position early on. However, they must put this behind them and come back with renewed energy tomorrow.
Here’s a look at how ‘X-verse’ reacted to the day’s proceedings:
After the first session England will be the happier team at the end of Day 1. England will resume batting on Day 2 after being 5 down in session 1.
