Rajkumar Hirani, the filmmaker behind the recently released film Dunki, which stars Shah Rukh Khan, talked about why and when he chose to collaborate with the actor. In an interview with News18, he added that the actor’s charm has “enamoured” him.
According to Rajkumar, “I was in film school, and the hardest thing for any filmmaker to do was to figure out how to make their first picture. Is there a producer coming? Will there be an actor involved? As a result, all of the students watched television together in our common room. I remember seeing this show called Circus, and I can still clearly picture the scene with the camera angle where the actor was acting out a monologue.”
He further added, “His performance was amazing, even though I had no idea who he was. I promised myself that I would approach him and make a film as soon as I dropped out of school. When I finally graduated from the film institute two years later, Shah Rukh Khan was already a huge star (laughs). I therefore had to wait 20 years to work with him on a movie.”
The filmmaker confessed about the superstar saying, “I was enamoured by his charm. I used to wear earplugs and an eye mask when he gave me a shot. My assistant would inform me when he was done. ‘Sir shot khatam ho gaya hai (Sir the shot is over),’ at which point I would open my eyes and laugh. Putting jokes aside, he is a fantastic actor and a truly wonderful person.”
Critics and viewers gave the movie mixed reviews when it debuted in theatres on December 21. Within two days of its release, the movie brought in ₹49.7 crore, according to Sacnilk.com. A day prior to Prabhas’s film Salaar, Dunki, presented by JIO Studios, Red Chillies Entertainment, and Rajkumar Hirani Films, debuted in theatres. Salaar is currently competing with it at the box office.
Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani, and Kanika Dhillon are the co-writers of Dunki. This endearing story tells the story of four friends, Manu, Sukhi, Buggu, and Balli, who want to move to London to live a better life, but first, they must go through a difficult but transformative journey. Vicky Kaushal, Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani, and Anil Grover are also featured in Dunki.
